“Dedicated to Improving the Quality of Life for Others”
Riverview began in 1989 at a location in Topsham along the banks Androscoggin River as a small, unique school that provided non-competitive martial arts training in an outdoor setting, helping to prevent violence and promote a peaceful path in life. Over the years, Riverview made steady and progressive strides in programmatic and organizational development each year since its incorporation. Serving an increasing number of disadvantaged youth and growing requests for involvement with schools and other youth agencies, Riverview Foundation applied for non-profit status and was swiftly approved in 1994. As a non-profit organization, Riverview rapidly expanded its service to the community to achieve its mission of “improving the quality of life” through further development and expansion of educational programs.
Over time, Riverview’s programs have been employed as a prevention model for important issues such as substance abuse and delinquency prevention. The organization has become a recognized leader in addressing youth issues within the State of Maine.
Riverview Foundation is now located in South Portland and Topsham, Maine, and serves over 650 families annually, which is estimated to increase to 890 families in the year 2009. Riverview collaborates with many school departments/districts, state and local agencies as well as substance abuse prevention programs. Riverview Foundation is also recognized as a leader and a partner in both local and statewide partnerships addressing the needs of youth, including Maine Mentoring Partnership, Communities for Children and Youth and the Healthy Maine Partnership. Since 2000, Riverview has been contracted by several State of Maine agencies, including the Departments of Education, Corrections, and Health and Human Services, for effective approaches and services to address the needs of youth-at-risk.
